‘David’: Animated Musical Brings the Bible Warrior/Poet/King to Life

, | December 17, 2025 | By

David is a popular Biblical hero these days. There is the Prime Video/Wonder Project series House of David, currently in its second season, and the five-part animated series Young David (on Angel and Minno streaming services), geared specifically for kids.

This major figure in the history of Israel is again front and center in the new animated feature film from Angel Studios, David, in theaters on Dec. 19.

What Is David About?

From Angel Studios

DAVID is a larger-than-life animated feature film about one of the most fascinating figures in history. The movie tells the biblical story of David — warrior, poet, shepherd, and eventual king — whose faith and courage changed the course of nations. Through breathtaking animation and powerful music, DAVID brings to life the timeless story of a young man who trusted God against all odds.

David the Shepherd

The film begins with David shepherding his beloved flock of sheep. This young boy loves animals and manages to communicate with them. When a lion appears, the boy takes him on in order to save his sheep and her newborn lamb. He risks his own life to save his sheep.

When the prophet  Samuel arrives at his house, David is unexpectedly anointed the new King of Israel, but he does not want this honor. He is content tending his flock. Samuel insists David will be the next King of Israel, to the delight of most of his family ... but not quite yet.

Keeping his secret, the family continues with their lives. Then, the current king, Saul, suddenly summons David to his court. Their initial meeting bonds them in friendship, with Saul unaware of David’s new position as the next king.

No One Is Alone

When the Philistines once again declare war on the Israelites, it is young David who volunteers to fight against the giant Goliath. Facing consternation and laughter, David insists he will not be alone. God is with him.

Throughout the film David continually reminds everyone that God is with them. He says just as he looks after his sheep, God looks after them.

Heart of a Lion and Spirit of a Lamb

This young boy grows into a brave young man who commands the respect of everyone. Well, all except King Saul, who finally becomes aware that Samuel has anointed David to take over the throne.

Once Saul learns that David will succeed him, their friendship turns to animosity, on Saul’s part. Saul then decides to kill the young man, and, along with his army, sets out to hunt down David and his followers.

At this point, David wonders why God has put him in this situation. He eventually realizes that God has a reason. David’s destiny is soon revealed.

David is courageous, considerate, and kind. He cares for everyone, including Saul, even knowing that Saul wants him dead.

The Bible Story Unfolds

As the Biblical story unfolds, viewers see how David stands with his convictions about God and his people. Facing almost insurmountable odds, David unites the Israelites and brings peace to the land.

Music Blends with the Story

This movie is not only an animated retelling of the tale to entrance viewers of all ages, it is also a musical. Throughout the film, there are memorable songs that move the story along with zest and spirit.

The songs are not simply inserted into the film to add music, they also help with the story and the sentiments of the people.

Grammy-nominated musical artist Phil Wickham is one of the most recognizable voices in Christian music. His contribution to the film makes the story that much richer and appealing to audiences.

“There are few men that have had a greater impact on my life than King David,” said Wickham. “His story, his songs, and his faith have shaped me deeply.

Wickham added, What an honor it has been to help bring this character to life! It truly has been a dream come true that I never saw coming. Finding Davids voice inside of me was both a challenge and a joy -- thanks to an amazing team who helped guide the way! Im so proud to be a part of such a beautiful and life-giving film. I believe it will fill hearts with hope and lift eyes to Heaven for many years to come.

Film creator Phil Cunningham began this project almost 30 years ago.

He said, Phil Wickham embodies everything we hoped to capture in the character of David.  His voice carries adventure, energy, strength, and vulnerability - qualities that reflect Davids heart as a warrior and worshiper.”

Color Adds Another Fine Element

Being an animated film, the creators had plenty of leeway when it came to backgrounds and textiles. This is an important component that makes the film stand out.

The colorful scenes, combined with the drab desert scenes, create a sense of wonder and fascination. Yes, David and the Israelites must face some tragic times, but they are offset by the music and the color that enhance the story and make it enjoyable for even the youngest viewers.

Inspirational

As David reminds everyone, God is the maker of Heaven and Earth. He is their shepherd and guides them. There are countless references to his love of God throughout the film.

Cultural Elements

There are several Hebrew words and prayers in the film. However, even for those who do not understand Hebrew, the meanings are clear. For instance, David calls his mother Ema (ee-mah) and his father Abba (ah-baa), the Hebrew words.

Shalom is also use, as they all want and wish for each other, “Shalom. Peace be with you.”

That is the crux of the message. David, the young hero, fearless because God is with him, faces the toughest tests and leads with conviction knowing he is not alone. And his ultimate goal is God’s will, and peace.
