MALIA

NATIVE BALL showcases Malia’s sense of responsibility to her people  and is a universal example of commitment to a cause. Malia allowed  other young Native American girls to be seen.

How are you seen? For Indigenous communities, it too often means depictions  that are negative or stereotyped. Malia was seen, not just by her family and  coaches, or even just by her people, but by a wider world that frequently  overlooks the accomplishments of Native Americans, especially women. Everyone needs heroes and hope. Sports unite and often empower  communities. Malia represents the character and strength of her Native  people. Her story speaks to the value of sports in lifting up young people  in challenging environments, as they develop character,  resilience, teamwork, friendship and success.

“This documentary is a wonderful story about perseverance, encouragement and dedication from Malia’s extended  family. It seems to me we would all benefit with an army of Elders behind us.”
— Sandy Welch, Educator

“Storytelling is such a tradition for  Native Americans, and I think it’s how  we express ourselves in a way that  feels comfortable and more authentic  to us. So, to be able to share this story  in a film way … I just feel really grateful  to be a part of it.”
— Former Lady Griz Player, Simarron Schildt (Blackfeet)
