BritBox is rapidly becoming a go-to streamer for fans of quality British TV. Here are five shows now available, including one Bennet sister and four crimesolvers.
Some have episodes available on PBS stations and elsewhere, but BritBox brings them together in one place.
The long-awaited series based on the characters from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, The Other Bennet Sister focuses on sister Mary. Out of the five Bennet sisters, Mary is different. She is plain, wears spectacles, and immerses herself in books, whereas her four sisters are dedicated to attracting a suitable husband.
Mother Mrs. Bennet is vile when it comes to Mary. She sees no redeeming qualities in her daughter. Mary grows up feeling inadequate, but there does come a time when she is able to blossom.
Her story is captivating, as viewers see Mary’s transformation from a wallflower to a confident and desirable woman. Ella Bruccoleri plays Mary with compassion for this young woman who never measured up in her mother's eyes.
Last December marked the 250th anniversary of the birth of Jane Austen. Fans of the author can view adaptations of her novels as well as films about her life and popularity on BritBox.
The Other Bennet Sister opens a new window when it comes to the world of Jane Austen.
One of the newest hits this past season is Ludwig, a detective series with a twist.
David Mitchell stars as John Taylor, an intelligent man who designs puzzles and goes by the name Ludwig. When his twin brother, Detective Chief Inspector James, secretly goes missing, James' wife asks John to step into his place and find out what happened.
Although not a detective, John's (or Ludwig's) puzzle-solving background affords him the ability to see clues that the actual police miss. And being James’ twin, he manages to fool everyone while joining the team to solve various cases, which he does with uncanny ability.
This intriguing series has been renewed for a second season.
Now in its 15th season, Death in Paradise is so entertaining that it has survived the replacement of several of its main characters. Usually when the starring character is replaced, it’s not long until the popularity of a series declines. But that is not the case with this show.
When each detective inspector is replaced, the fun begins anew, as each one of the five inspectors brings a unique quirkiness, adding to the entertainment of the show. In every episode the crimes are solved, thanks to the weird abilities of the DIs.
Death in Paradise is set in the Caribbean. This fun show has been such a big hit for BritBox they have two spin-off series -- Beyond Paradise that takes place in the UK, and Return to Paradise that takes place in Australia.
After it debuted in May 2025, Death Valley became the highest-rated new BBC scripted comedy in five years.
Timothy Spall stars as John Chapel, an eccentric retired actor who once starred as a detective in a popular police drama. Gwyneth Keyworth costars as Detective Sergeant Janie Mallowan. She was a big fan of Chapel’s fictional TV show, which inspired her to become a cop.
When she approaches him about a murder that happened in his neighborhood, she realizes who he is, or was. John jumps right into the investigation. After all, he was a detective. Or at least he played one on TV.
The two forge an unlikely partnership as, even though his past cases were all scripted, he manages to bring back some of his old character’s characteristics to help the investigations. What he discovers is that fiction or not, he has the ability to solve crimes.
The second season of Death Valley drops this month.
The hit series Father Brown is currently on its 13th season with a 14th on the horizon. Mark Williams has captured the hearts of viewers as the lovable and instinctive Catholic priest who has, at times, ruffled the feathers of the local constabulary in his rural parish.
Father Brown always wants to see justice is done, and when someone is possibly unjustly accused of a crime, he immediately sets off on his own investigation to get to the bottom of it.
Along with some of his friends -- lately his church secretary Mrs. Divine (now Sullivan), and housekeeper Brenda Palmer -- they often find themselves in precarious situations, but with good motives.
Father Brown is always entertaining, a nice respite from our hectic world, with a faith-based twist.
